Ticket #03 · guide

Documentation the auditor believes

SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset is the ticket for networks that must explain themselves: sixty-plus utilities that join what free sweepers only list, and print results that survive an audit folder.

What the licence buys

Free tools tell you an address answered. Toolset tells you which switch, which port, which VLAN and which port description — because it reads ARP and SNMP bridge tables together instead of one at a time.

Discovery that draws the map

The MAC discovery utility walks the segment and lays out what it finds, ready to compare against the network drawing that is definitely current.

Switch ports, named and numbered

The Switch Port Mapper is the utility that justifies the desk space: address to physical port, with the port's own description alongside. This is the layer free scanners never reach.

Every address pinned to a port you can point at.

SNMP without ceremony

The MIB browser and scanner answer the questions between “it pings” and “it is healthy” — interface loads, uptime, error counters — provided the device speaks SNMP and you hold the community string.

MIB browser walking an SNMP device
Walk the tree, read the counters, close the ticket.
MIB scanner checking a range of devices
A range of devices checked for the same few OIDs.

The everyday utilities

Ping sweeps and traceroute live here too — faster and more readable than their command-line cousins, and logged the same way as everything else on the board.

A sweep with a spreadsheet instead of a scrollback.
Traceroute utility mapping the path to a host
Where the packets actually went, hop by hop.

Ticket notes

  • Windows desk tool, not a monitoring platform — it answers when asked.
  • The trial is fully functional; one mapped network settles the buying question.
  • Point it only at gear you administer. The same rule as every other ticket here.
